Four years... 600 pages... Dreamscape ends!

Wow, four years already? Time sure flies! And I'm impressed the comic went this far... 600 pages... Well, like I've said many times, thank you guys for reading! (And now for a giant comment, of course!)
And yeah, again, the anniversary page is drawn, but going lineless unlike the previous pages because that's the style I'm using right now. And boy, this one was certainly really hard to make...
I started the drawings around the middle of November, but I only finished them in the beginning of December! Stuff happened, and I finished tracing them on December 10th. On December 11th, I scanned the drawings and did pretty much everything but add the backgrounds and shade. And if you want to know the truth, I spent almost the whole day doing that! It was hard and took a lot of time, mainly because I was going lineless and, you know, I don't have a drawing tablet. So what I do is pretty much remove the lineart when coloring... And yeah, that takes some time.
Anyway, December 12th I didn't have much time so I added all the background and shaded half of the drawings, and I only finished them for sure yesterday, December 13th. And then I added the text and stuff... But I only finished the page this morning. Yeah.
Yes, I forgot to draw Gigi. I wrote the script normally and only like some days ago I realized I had completely forgot that I always put Gigi in the page to say something, but I had already scanned the drawings and I didn't have much time, so I ignored it. She can be off screen, anyway, so shh.
So, some things about this page. First of all, you have probably already realized that the borders of the panels aren't exactly that good... Well, it's because I did them, without a ruler. Yeah. I thought that would add some charm to it, not being that "perfect", but that was actually awful. So, uh, sorry about that. Also, the backgrounds were done 100% on my computer, with a mouse, so I hope they are ok. This time I decided to go for something simpler, just sky and ground, and I liked that. And the last thing is the shading: this time I decided to do projected shading. Well, in some of the drawings I think it turned out pretty well, but in some, eh, I don't like it that much. So yeah, just know that it was one of the first times I tried that.
Anyway, I think that's it about this page, at least art-wise (later in the comment I'll talk more about other stuff of this page). Now, let's talk about Dreamscape...
Oh boy, what an interesting chapter. Oh well, I really liked to work on this one. There are lots of things I want to talk about this chapter, so let's get started!
Well, honestly right now I don't remember how I had the idea of this chapter. I only know that I wanted to make a chapter where I showed Zan and Jake's relationship, with some character development involved. I think it was because I wanted to show Jake trying to help Zan, since this would show their relationship well, and then I suddenly decided to make nightmares be involved... Yeah, that might be it. So, I only had the basic idea for some time... Well, REALLY basic. I only had the beginning of the chapter ready. I knew Zan would have nightmares, I knew he would tell Jake about it, something would happen and Jake would enter his dreams. I didn't know exactly, though, how Zan would get freed from his nightmares, and I didn't know as well what Jake would do to try to help Zan.
Well, it was when I had some sudden inspiration. Linking Jake's personalities with Zan's "problems", Jake telling stories to make Zan forget about something bad sounded really fitting. And that's the route I decided to take. With that, I knew how Jake would try to help Zan... But still, how would Zan stop having the nightmares? Well, of course, Jake would tell him that he has nothing to fear, stuff like that, but it couldn't be that simple. So, what could I do...
Want to know the truth? I had one idea before to how to solve that, but right in the beginning of the chapter I changed it. Honestly, the first idea wasn't that good and I never exactly liked it. When I had a better idea, that Zan could only see Jake, and not hear him, I decided to go that way. And I actually liked it, and I apparently caught you guys off guard. So, good!
So, that's about it about the ideas of the chapter... But now, what did I want to do with this chapter? Like I said in the beginning, I'd focus both on Zan and Jake, but for different reasons. Let's talk more about that.
Well, first of all, I focused on Zan to develop his personality. You already know Zan pretty well based on the other chapters, so right now what I wanted to do was remove again his fear of using his powers. "Again"? Yeah, Zan lost great part of that fear once, but he got it back. Let's go back to the beginning of the comic. In Two Revenges in One, when Zan used Crash to destroy the Halberd, he was sorta scared, ok, but he used Crash anyway. He didn't cry, he didn't get stressed, nothing that bad. He had less fear. And then, again, in We Are Not Alone, Zan was about to use Crash to beat Panee (heck, he even said he could kill Panee!), but did that happen? No. You know why? Panee mentioned THAT fact. And that made Zan get more scared, and he even stopped using Crash. Enough? Well, Zan got some fear back at that time, sure, but that wasn't the worst fact. Some more things: Panee, again, made him remember about that: when he gave that photo with the Waddle Dees to Zan, in A Memorable Morning. Zan, for the first time of the comic, cried. Uh. Not enough! In the Miraculous Treasures, Zan went straight to Mallow Castle and, of course, that made him remember about his incident. Good thing Clare was there to cheer him up, but still... (And oh, you guys who like that Clare has a crush on Zan, it started all here~) And, FINALLY, in Xiaolin Showdown... Zan decided to use Crash, and note something, he was trying to avoid using that. When he was about to fire, he remembers about what Panee told him, and gives up. As if it wasn't enough, Xiaolin goes and provokes him, calling him a monster. Good job Xiaolin, that made Zan remember something else: right after when he destroyed Mallow Castle, he met Jake for the first time as he was running and was so damn scared that he didn't want to hurt him, so he said he was monster and that Jake had to stay away from him. Boy! But of course, as soon as Zan hears the word "monster", already not that good, he fires without thinking. Xiaolin of course is OP and dodges, and then he decided to be very nice, saying that he will beat Zan even though he's crying. Zan, already pretty much crushed, wishes that he'd die since he now knows he's indeed a monster. Then Xiaolin makes him faint... Maybe for the best?
...Oh, let's take a breath. You get it? Zan was ok, then all that happened. Poor Zan. And yes, if you're wondering, Jake made Zan more confident after the incident. Zan probably wouldn't even be alive right now if it wasn't Jake. And, of course, after all that, Jake could solve it again... Right?
Right, but that would take a while, like the first time, and maybe that wouldn't work again. So, what could change Zan deep inside, effectively and quickly? ...Some dream therapy. Yeah, I have crazy ideas.
But yeah, now I remember, one of the reasons I decided to make this chapter related to dreams was how I could develop Zan. Jake pretty much interacted with Zan's subconscious in the dream, and that is way more effective than interacting with the conscious... Eh... Maybe you lost me already. I don't know if you get this crazy idea.
Ok, but that was what I wanted to do with Zan, develop him. He can't simply fear using his powers too much because of the incident, but he can't go randomly spamming Crash because why not. Oh yeah, and in fact, something else I wanted to show about Zan in this chapter but, sadly, I couldn't make it fit, was his powers' limits... Because you know, he has three limited abilities. But they are permanent. How does that exactly work? Yeah, I wanted to explain it, but it didn't fit the chapter. I'll be sure to do it someday, though, and I want to do it in the comic for some reason. So yeah.
And just one more quickly thing about Zan, that wasn't exactly the focus but happened anyway: how he helps others but forgets about himself. He learned something related to that, mainly after he rested for a day, but that still wasn't enough to change him a lot. So yes, Zan still helps others more than himself, but at least now he realizes he can't completely forget about himself.
So, now that I talked about Zan... What about Jake? Well, Jake in this chapter needed something completely different. He didn't need character development, unless you count effectively showing his personality for the first time character development. And yeah, if you come to think of it, it IS character development. But it's still different to Zan's. I never really focused on Jake. One time or another, for one page max, I focused on him, and that was it. And I'm pretty sure most of you knew nothing, or almost nothing, about Jake. I just hope that this changed after this chapter. I don't know if you noticed it, but Jake actually ended up being the focus on this chapter. Even though it was Zan who was having the nightmares, it was Jake who tried to help Zan, it was Jake who entered a dream, it was Jake who met Nightmare, it was Jake who freed Zan from Nightmare... And yeah, that was my intention. Sure, Zan needed character development, but Jake would give him this development, because Jake needs to be shown more, and Zan was already shown many different times, and was the focus also too many times. There you go.
Anyway, let's talk a bit about Jake's personality, shall we? First of all, he's creative. If there's a problem, he will come with some clever solution. Sometimes it may take a while, but he'll have an idea. He sometimes may get lost, however, in his own imagination and start wondering about stuff like the meaning of life. If you want some term for that, he sometimes philosophizes. And there's something else that I can't find exact words for, so I'll try to explain. He's always in a good mood... But he can say some things at inconvenient times... I don't know if you get that...
...Anyway, that's pretty much Jake's personality! And now you know it. Yay. And yes, I'm bad at explaining personalities. Yay again.
So, something else I wanted to show in this chapter was Jake and Zan's relationship. Like what happened in Ninja'd, I had never really focused on the two alone, so I tried to do that now. However, Jake and Zan's relationship is different from Percy and Yan's.
Percy and Yan are more like helping buddies. They both like to help others with their plans and stuff, and they are friends mostly because of that. However, Jake and Zan are more like emotional friends. You know that kind of friend that helps you feel better when you're down and stuff similar? They are friends because of that. Not only because of that, of course, but great part because of that.
...And yes, they are emotional friends... And yes, they are boys... If you don't have a problem with that, good. If you do... Well, just know there's no reason why two boys can't be friends like that. I know most of the time you'll picture two girls (and maybe even a boy and a girl, but never two boys) talking about their problems to each other and finding it normal, but if it's two boys you'll find it weird, but know there's no reason for that. They are friends like that, and that's it, and you shouldn't find it weird, at all, because there's no reason for it.
Anyway, that's it about the two. Now for another character that was in this chapter... Nightmare.
Why was he here? Well, I could just go and say "Just 'cause.". BUT he does have a reason to be in this chapter! ...Well, only somewhat. You see, why would Zan, out of blue, start having nightmares like that? He was completely fine in previous chapters. Nightmare deciding to attack him, and continue doing it because of Zan's fear came to my mind and fitted pretty well, so I used this idea. That was pretty much it. Also, I like using previous Kirby villains, and Nightmare in this chapter couldn't be more fitting. So yeah, that was why Nightmare is in this chapter.
Now some comment, about the dream pages... BOY THEY ARE TIRING TO MAKE. Ok, not really, but they sure take much more time to make than regular pages. I had to add, in every single panel individually, that dream effect. So yeah, it was tiring, but fun to make, actually.
So, now, did you ever wonder why this chapter was called "Dreamscape"? Well, of course the first reason is because it's related to dreams, and dreamscapes are those painting that are supposed to be crazy like dreams. But it's also mean to be more like "Dream Escape", because of how Zan was "trapped" in his nightmares. Yeah. I don't know if that worked too well, though.
Ok, so just one more thing about this chapter, but that's actually related to the previous chapter. I was told that Oh No had been too predictable, and after going back to it I realized that yeah, it was a really predictable chapter. Maybe Galacta Knight being behind all that wasn't expected, but everything else pretty much was. So, I tried to make this chapter less predictable, and I at the very least thing Dreamscape was less predictable than Oh No. But well, I'm the author, not a reader, so I could be wrong, so maybe if you guys could comment about it, it would be cool.
So, enough about this chapter in general. Like I said, I think this one went fairly well. Now, let's go back to this page and talk a bit about it.
What's happening in the page? Well, obviously, Zan decided to visit the Waddle Dee's graves (if that's even the correct word). Actually, Jake convinced him to do that. Still, this is the first time Zan is visiting them after the incident. What he had done before was completely ignore the past. "Ignore" because he just wanted to forget about it. Is that wrong? Well, yes it is. Just forgetting a mistake, and not trying to learn from it before doesn't help you at all. But at the rate he was after the incident, that was the best thing to do. If you keep thinking about a mistake right after you did it, it's only worse. So, naturally, after a while, you should remember about your mistake and try to learn from it. Well, Jake knew that Zan had never visited the graves, because he wanted to forget about it, but now was the time for Zan to learn from his mistakes, so nothing better than visiting them to represent that. Well, I hope you get the idea behind that.
Also, one of the things that bothered Zan, but he never really talked about, was the fact that he had lost his family, and wanted to have one again at some time. But what he didn't realize, and Jake told him, is that a family can have different formats. His first was two adult Waddle Dees with a child, and now he's part of another: ...a bunch of clones of Kirby. But still, they consider themselves a family. And it's the thought that counts, right? :)
Yeah, this comment is already too big, hahaha. Now just for some few final comments.
You may have realized, or maybe not, but anyway this year was pretty much only character development. Every chapter but Inside Out had some characters are the focus, for the sake of character development. And, actually, I liked that. I thought these chapters would end up being too boring for both you guys and I, but I was wrong. Maybe you still like the chapters that are more random and have more action, but from what I got you guys still liked these chapters. And that's a good thing.
But well, next chapter won't be character development, I'll do something different. You'll have to wait and see~!
Anyway, guys, thanks so much for everything. I've already said many times, the other years were almost the same thing, but let's have a quick review: thank you so much for reading the comic, thanks for all your support, thanks for the tips and criticism, I'm sorry if I was rude to any of you for whatever reason, I still can't believe this comic turned out to be something big like this, etc etc etc. Welp! Now for more to come! :D

@contradiction123: By that logic, Clare x Zan would also be incest...

But it's okay! They're not biologically related, so it's not creepy at all!

...Is it weird that I actually take the time to read every single one of your wall of text end-of-chapter comments?

Zach = Green Waddle Dee wearing top hat.
Amanda = Yellow Waddle Dee with a pink bow.
Nickie = Blue Waddle Dee carrying two balloons.

Am I right?

...what an enormous text wall.

Anyway, amazingly drawn as usual. Looks really adorable.

As for the borders, it's not really noticeable when you have a good scene. I really don't care about borders when I draw or that would take twelve million years anyway.

ehh... *skips Dreamscape behind the scenes explanation* But yes, Dreamscape really was unpredictable.

If this "pairing" trend is gonna continue and the next one isn't between Matt and Natty then that's sparta- erm, madness.

And I have an account. That's unexpected.

As a response to your reply... (HURR HURR I'M REDUNDANT!)

@Gigi19972010: I'd say...maybe Thursday or Friday will work for me. But, if it's gonna be Friday, it will be a while for me to contact you, as I'm heading to Virginia immediately after I get off work at 1 p.m. Also, I'm not sure on which video service I should use, because I took a look at Skype's page on the Google Play store, and from what I could tell, it was buggy as all hell. All the same, can you send the word along to Ultimate Yoshi for me? I'd still like for him to participate, if that's okay with you.

@Cherry the Puffball:

What do you mean exactly?

no no no
And yeah, hooray~

yes pretty

I'm not even going to go again and explain the whole "incest" thing, apparently no one understands it. And yes I know you may be being sarcastic.
And no, it's not weird. You're just one of the few people that actually do it every time.

Yes you are.

The borders were really noticeable for me, so that's why I talked about them.
Ok, good to know that it was unpredictable.
I'm not really sure if I'll continue with pairings honestly, at least that won't be the focus.
And ohhh. Cool.

@Trevor the Hedgehog:

Hmm, ok.
Video service? Well, first I can't really video call. I don't have a camera and even if I did, my parents wouldn't like it that much. Also Skype on mobile only allows video calls between two people... So, I don't know. And yeah, I can tell him, or you can do it, either works.

And yeah, I'm still out of school.

@Green Kirby the Leaft:

Thank you.

Hmm... Honestly, I don't know when exactly. All I know is that, for some time now, Larry and Raven won't talk to each other.

@Fighter Dee:

Good to know you think that.

Thanks! And nice.

@Christal shard64:

But the next chapter isn't for character development.

@eevee fan:

Other kirbies? Well, I already explained about their names in the author comment of the 200th page, and Lindroganti and Xiaolin in the end of Xiaolin Showdown, iirc. If you mean the kirbies like Kixty, Kanby and Kelmy, they got pretty much random names that I thought that fitted them, but all starting with K and ending with Y.
